Some Character Classes

So…you’re starting out and you don’t know what to play. Chrono-Rogue is a game where you start with a class and then it opens up to a game of infinite customization. That can be overwhelming for a lot of players, so this entry is to help players decide what kind of characters they want to start with. Below are the starting character classes in the Core rulebook of Chrono-Rogue, and through them you’ll start to see the opportunities you’ll enjoy when making a new character.

Social Characters- Social characters will be those with a higher Savvy, Willpower, and Cunning. These characters will utilize Edges that give them a bit of power in social situations, having a higher Charm, Empathy, High-Society and Subterfuge than most. With these characters, one will be able to manipulate the locals to their point of view and be able to blend in the best.
Social Classes- Merchant, Fallen Noble, Court of Silk, and Codex Inscriptionist

Technical Characters- The characters that know the most about the nature of Chronotech and Time travel are good at finding and utilizing Chronotech in any given timeline. They will know how to fix the ship, and how to build Automatons to help the crew when necessary. They will have a greater knack for gear building and repair, for in Chrono-Rogue, any piece of gear in the gear section can be built by a character with the right skill sets.
Technical Classes- Cog, Engineer, Former Codex Inscriptionist

Combat Characters- These characters will have the greatest head start on inflicting damage and surviving an onslaught. They have Edges that improve their ability to ambush a foe, or hold out in a straight up fist fight or brawl. Each of these characters will have an advantage in combat and have a unique style.
Combat Classes- Former Soldier, Crooked Alley, Void Dancer, Court of Silk

Utility Characters- Utility characters can fulfill a specific role that is specific within the crew. Some might be expert infiltrators, some good at healing, some might be shrewd pilots, and some may excel at haggling. These characters are not be underestimated, for they are the gateways to some very interesting builds.
Utility Classes- Void Dancer, Sawbones, Merchant, Crooked Alley, Former Codex Inscriptionist

What kinds of selections should one make? With many backgrounds to choose from, the type of character you want to play will start to emerge with just a few choices. One’s Chronolith can flavor the sort of environment a character grew up around, contextualizing a belief structure, skill-set, and goals all in one selection. Building your other choices will be a matter of seeing what you want to do with your character. In social warfare, do you wish to Brick an opponent’s will with invocations, or slyly charm and manipulate them? In physical combat do you wish to destroy from a distance with ranged attacks, kill up close and personal in melee, or shred a foe by ambushing them? Do you wish to build a unique character who is a little good at a lot of things and injects poison on the side?
