Examples of Jobs
Normally when playing Chrono-Rogue, your crew will be hired by a Void Baron to go to a timeline and perform some task. Sometimes the task will be singular, go to a timeline and steal an artifact, murder a historical figure, or plant a piece of technology. Setting a number of tasks into place can be a way of keeping characters in a particular timeline for longer.
Wild West- The Wild West is a great time period to investigate for your crew. Shootouts in front of saloons, digging for rare resources, ghost stories, fighting alongside indigenous people, destroying corrupt mayors and their stranglehold on a region-- all of these are accessible in this time period as a backdrop for their adventures.
Possible Job-Go to the town of Ravengold and investigate a strange disease that’s cropped up among the citizens. The Void Baron believes it’s human made, so finding out who made it and finding the cure might be part of this adventure.
Complications- Complications could include a corrupted bandit leader who is giving watered down samples of the cure to help alleviate the town. Players may have to infiltrate the bandits, or trail them back to their lair to see who they are working for.
Vikings- The Viking era is a fantastic period to visit. Battles and raids at sea and land, ancient lore regarding the Norse mythology and its connections to paradox, and a variety of quests into ancient ruins for stolen artifacts are possible in this setting.
Possible Job-Find the Secret Viking island- Characters are hired to steal a paradox infected stone that is being kept on a secret island. The crew must infiltrate or follow a Viking raiding party back to the island and infiltrate. They find ancient beasts straight out of Norse myth guarding the islands- Giant wolves, trolls, and giants wandering some of the island. The characters must avoid these massive monsters in order to find the Viking keep, infiltrate it and find out the secret of the stone and why the void baron wants it.
Complications- Werewolves, giants, trolls, eldritch sea beasts, these are all complications the party may face. They may have to fight powerful creatures on unequal footing. Weather could be a factor as well, driving snows will force them to find shelter—Ancient caves full of secrets and runes and more.
Revolutionary France- A period of oppression, atrocity, and savage hope are the landmarks of this era. So many interesting political figures for the players to encounter and influence. Attacks on the Parisian streets between the city watch, and the revolutionaries. Explosions and danger around every corner for the players to get embroiled in.
Possible Job-Vampire In Paris- There is a monster hunting in the streets of Paris. The crew is hired to infiltrate Paris on the eve of full revolution breaking out to locate a paradox infected human with strange abilities. They might come up against a cult that worships the creature’s power, and have to disentangle their influence before being able to find the monster and put and end to it.
Complications- The revolution creates a chaotic backdrop for the crew’s adventures. Questions and paranoia will force them to adopt interesting identities on both the noble side, and on the side of the revolution. They could talk to actual philosophers and anarchists from that time period and who knows, maybe one or two of them join the crew as NPCs.
